New president sworn-in

Fradique de Menezes, who won the August presidential elections, was sworn in on Monday as the new head of the West African archipelago over which he will rule for the next five years, media organisations reported. Although better known as a businessman, Menezes won the polls in the first round with 54 percent of the votes. His nearest rival, Manuel Pinto da Costa, Sao Tome’s first president, won 39 percent of the ballots.
