The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide US $232,000 needed to make 6,200 desks for schools throughout the Republic of Congo, Hilly Anne Fumey, the UNDP community action project manager, told IRIN.
The desks will benefit 12,400 students, and improve the working conditions of teachers. Fumey noted that the project would involve parents, associations, local collectives, political and administrative officials, and provide work for local artisans.
She said the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had identified a need for a total of 153,411 desks for primary schools and 40,816 for secondary schools nationwide.
