Kabila says parliament “not a sham”

President Kabila on Monday said the only way forward for the Congolese people was to continue “resisting foreign interference”, DRC state television reported. Speaking at the inauguration of the new transitional assembly in Lubumbashi, he said: “You are the parliament, the true parliament of our country...It is now a responsible parliament enjoying immense powers.” “They believed this would be a kind of sham institution as usual, and that there would be no responsible and meticulous work done,” Kabila added. The new speaker of parliament, Tshiamalawa Kamuanya, assured the president that the members “shall never betray the confidence that the people have put in the newly established institution”.
