BOTSWANA: Election date set for 16 October

Johannesburg, 27 August 1999 (IRIN) - Botswana will go the polls on 16 October, according news reports on Friday quoting President Festus Mogae.

Presidential spokesman, Andrew Sesinyi, said there were seven political parties contesting the elections and that they would have to submit their presidential nominations by 18 September.

Nominations for the 44 parliamentary seats have to submitted by 24 September.

According to media reports, only about half the potential electorate have registered. Botswana has a population of about 1.5 million people and gained independence from Britain in 1966.
