Belligerents in the conflicts in the Great Lakes region want to speed up the implementation of various peace agreements. “All the belligerents in the wars in the region are interested on moving with speed to ending conflict,” South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday. Zuma said he had held “very fruitful” talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his deputy Speciosa Kazibwe in Kampala. “They have recommitted themselves to the content of agreements aimed at stopping the wars in the Great Lakes region,” Zuma said. “We shared the view that both South Africa and Uganda have a role to play in the implementation of a ceasefire in the affected countries.” He said that he would soon meet with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa. While in Kampala, Zuma also spoke by telephone to one of the signatories of the Arusha agreement. He said that Mandela would soon call a summit of all belligerents in the Burundi conflict.
