In Brief: Pakistan tests tsunami preparedness
 Photo: IFRC  | | In July 2007, Cyclone Yemyin left 245 people dead and affected a further 2.3 million people (file photo) | ISLAMABAD, 19 October 2009 (IRIN) - A drill for rescuing people in coastal areas in the event of a tsunami was carried out in Thatta, Sindh Province, by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) supported by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) on 17 October.
The effectiveness of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System was also tested.
About 500 people living in coastal areas participated in the drill. In July 2007 Cyclone Yemyin left 245 people dead and affected a further 2.3 million people, according to a report by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Senior NDMA official Amir Muhiuddin told the media the exercise was intended to increase preparedness and improve coordination throughout the coastal region.
