An Asian longliner fishing at the EEZ boundaries of Madagascar and the Seychelles is caught in the spotlight of a patrol vessel. This longliner was licensed, but Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing by industrial vessels in Malagasy waters over the last two decades has caused untold and irreparable damage. IUU longliners targeted sharks for their high value fins and liver oil. With only three patrol vessels, 24 inspectors and little money, Madagascar does not have the means to patrol its EEZ of over one million square kilometres. This joint patrol between Madagascar, the Seychelles and Mauritius was financed by the EU.
