The A-9 highway, a lifeline in Sri Lanka

NOVEMBER 2012 - The A-9 highway, an artery connecting central and northern Sri Lanka, offers a measure of the country’s health. The site of fierce battles and heavy mining during the country’s decades-long civil war, the road re-opened for civilian use in July 2009, just weeks after the conflict ended. The A-9 now offers a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s recovery, as construction, commercial transportation and commuter traffic resume.
