Activists want AIDS council disbanded

Kenyan AIDS activists are pushing for the existing National AIDS Control Council (NACC) to be scrapped, and for top officials to pay back monies they illegally acquired from the council.

The Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS in Kenya (NEPHAK) described the NACC as "a national disgrace" after a recent audit showed that officials had used donor funds to pay themselves almost US $500,000 irregularly.

NEPHAK secretary-general Joe Muriuki was quoted by the local East African Standard newspaper as saying: "Following the massive looting at the council, the president should reconstitute it."

Muriuki also accused the NACC of wasting public money "to deny obvious cases of fraud" by placing advertisements.
