IRIN seeks Interim CEO to relaunch humanitarian news service

IRIN is recruiting a seasoned transition CEO to lead IRIN as it completes its separation from the United Nations and positions itself to be the pre-eminent humanitarian news service globally.

IRIN was the first news service of its kind, founded 20 years ago by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in response to the gap in humanitarian reporting exposed by the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath. What started as daily faxes to aid workers has turned into an award-winning humanitarian news and analysis service that delivers reporting from the frontlines of crises, reaching at least two million people annually – a fraction of the audience we intend to serve.

With the freedom and flexibility afforded by independence from the UN, IRIN is in a position to not only be the first, but also the biggest and most authoritative service. With the dramatic downsizings of major media organizations, and closing of so many international bureaus, IRIN is often the only professional source of humanitarian news covering protracted crises. IRIN, therefore, is vital and will be increasingly so as the frequency, length, scale, and complexity of conflicts and disasters grow. Furthermore, IRIN is becoming an independent non-profit at a time when the most innovative, investigative and objective news reporting is emerging from the non-profit world, from organizations like ProPublica.

Contract period: As soon as possible until 31 December 2014. Continued employment beyond 31 December will depend on success of the start-up, performance and board approval.

Remuneration: The initial appointment will be at the UN P5 consultancy rate (depending on qualifications/ experience). All work-related travel is covered.

Location: Flexible with up to 30% travel required.

Deadline for application: June 20, 2014

How to apply

For more details and/or to apply, please send the following to

  • Cover letter that briefly addresses how you fit our criteria, and how you can successfully guide IRIN through this transition. We will not consider applications that do not directly address these questions.
  • CV/PHP
  • Three examples of similar projects (a few lines’ description on each undertaking and project duration) and three references total.

Who we seek

The Interim CEO will lead the organization through the process of separating from its long-time parent organization. (S)he will help the organization secure and strengthen its foundation and develop the plans for launch as an independent non-profit organization. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of a highly regarded humanitarian service and help a respected brand take on a more cutting edge, innovative place in the media marketplace.

The successful candidate will have international managerial experience, preferably in at least one of those industries. This manager will have experience managing private, public or non-profit ventures, and will have headed business transformation processes (“change management”) with measurable, successful results. Ideally, the chosen candidate will have experience restructuring/re-launching companies.
