The health department of South Africa's Gauteng Province this week began providing anti-AIDS treatment at seven new sites.
A local newspaper, the Sunday Times, quoted provincial health minister Gwen Ramokgopa as saying: "So far there are approximately 5,000 people on treatment ... the government is satisfied with the progress it is making and is confident that it will reach its target."
The province aims to treat 10,000 HIV-positive people at 23 facilities by March next year, with the additional sites bringing the number of operational facilities to 18.
