Mali - The Humanitarian

This film is part of our multimedia special Trouble in Timbuktu: http://www.irinnews.org/webspecial/mali/index.html The last thing northern Mali needed in 2012 was a reduction in access by aid agencies. Like much of the Sahel region, it was in the grip of a severe food crisis. Fernando Arroyo, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Mali, explains that access improved significantly after the liberation by French forces, but that some parts of the three northern regions - Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal - are still inaccessibly to aid agencies because of fragile security conditions.
