The recent rollout of free anti-AIDS drugs in South Africa's Gauteng province will soon extend to the Eastern Cape province.
Sizwe Kupelo, the media liaison officer for the Eastern Cape department of health, said seven hospitals across the province would be able to administer antiretrovirals by the second week in May.
Existing HIV/AIDS testing and prevention centres are expected to serve as entry points to the treatment programme, while health care clinics will provide screening services, follow-up, and monitoring of patients.
Kupelo told the UN news service PlusNews: "We will also continue to build our partnerships with NGOs and community-based organisations to provide ongoing counselling."
