IRIN hires new Africa editor and marketing manager

IRIN has hired experienced editor Sumayya Ismail as Africa Editor and Anna Rohleder as its first-ever marketing manager.

Sumayya Ismail is a journalist and editor covering sub-Saharan Africa. Before joining IRIN, she spent a decade working in the news media and non-profit sectors in Johannesburg, London and Doha, including for Al Jazeera English, the Mail & Guardian, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Action Aid. Her focus includes human rights, development, health, urbanisation and climate change.

"As someone who is passionate about nurturing local voices to tell local stories, I am proud to join an organisation that believes in passing the mic so that those who own a story can tell it for themselves,” she said.

IRIN has also hired its first ever marketing manager. Anna Rohleder joins just as the organisation prepares to rebrand in 2019 with a new name that will reflect its mission to report from the heart of conflicts and natural disasters to inform crisis prevention and response. She has a background in journalism as well as marketing communications for a variety of organisations, including non-profit technology companies.

She said, "We have all the ingredients of a great news brand, and I look forward to help establishing IRIN as a go-to source for news about a changing world."
