In Brief: HIV-positive cases jump to 556 in Afghanistan
KABUL, 5 November 2009 (IRIN Global) - Over 50 people have been diagnosed as HIV-positive in Afghanistan over the past nine months, bringing the number of registered cases to 556, according to the National HIV/AIDS Control Programme.

GLOBAL: Chronic diseases reach “epidemic” proportions - WHO
DAKAR, 19 June 2009 (IRIN Global) - Chronic diseases—especially cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory and heart diseases – kill twice as many people worldwide every year than do infectious diseases HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, combined. HERAT, 21 January 2009 (IRIN Asia) - Ebadullah, aged 26, worked in Iran illegally for four years, but was deported on 3 January. Whilst in Iran he used sex workers and intravenous drugs - unaware of the risks of contracting HIV.

AFGHANISTAN: HIV-positive patients to get ARV therapy for first time
KABUL, 7 January 2009 (IRIN Asia) - Forty of the 504 people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Afghanistan will be provided with standard antiretroviral therapy for the first time, as efforts are made to boost control of the killer disease, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has said.
