PAKISTAN: Karachi fishing community at risk (video)

KARACHI , 17 April 2008 (IRIN) -
Karachi, Pakistan’s bustling commercial capital with a population of an estimated 15 million people, attracts around half a million people every year from rural areas looking for employment. It is estimated that half of Karachi’s population live in slums.

Karachi’s coastline is home to Ibrahim Haidery, a fishing settlement housing 120,000 people. Living next to the sea in a 500-year-old settlement has major consequences. The monthly high tides flood homes up to a metre high.

This video short looks at the life of single father and fisherman Yousef who lives with his son and 18 relatives. Yousef’s family moved to the settlement several decades ago in search of a better life, but have to beg for flour to make bread.
