17 killed in Russian airstrike on Ukrainian city
A Russian airstrike on Chernihiv in northern Ukraine on Wednesday morning killed at least 17 people and injured dozens more as three missiles slammed into a busy central area of the city, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cited the lack of proper air defence equipment as part of the reason why the attack could not be prevented.
Zelenskyy's concerns are backed by a recent report by the Institute for the Study of War that states: “US policymakers must internalise the reality that further delaying or stopping American military assistance will lead to dramatic Russian gains later in 2024 and in 2025 and, ultimately, to Russian victory.”
As Russian attacks continue, the US Senate continues to discuss splitting a $95 billion aid bill – originally for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan – that would allocate $60 billion for Ukraine. In Europe, EU leaders were also set to discuss providing more arms to Ukraine, notably air defence systems, at a European Council meeting on Wednesday and Thursday in Brussels.
